On Wednesday, May 18, 2022, Prime Time expanded learning opportunity provider Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) in Juno Beach. hosted a Prime Time STEAM cohort professional development field trip. Afterschool directors and practitioners (17) joined Prime Time’s STEAM Professional Development Specialist Patricia Sasson for a morning of sea turtle 101 and marine biology. LMC educator Emily Griffith presented a sea of facts from the seven different sea turtle types to what sea turtle nesting looks like right here at Juno Beach. Together the group learned about LMC’s mission of ‘Rescue to Release,’ where rescued sea turtles are housed and rehabilitated with the intent to release them back to the ocean when they are healthy.
Emily also took Prime Time’s STEAM cohort members through Loggerhead’s free online curriculum, lesson activities and supporting curriculum videos for youth. In addition, she presented various educational events that out-of-school time programs, youth and families could participate in: Junior Rescue Labs, Turtle Walks, Sunrise Nesting Excavations and more. Field trip attendees also learned about various sharks and fish that swim in the campus tanks, took a quick peek through the turtle hospital windows, and played in the new technology interactive learning stations.
