Prime Time's Sixth Annual Afterschool Symposium was a successful event with several hundred in attendance over the two-day event held at the Hilton Palm Beach Airport, May 11-12, 2017. The goal of the annual symposium is to introduce out-of-school time professionals to 'best practices' for implementing high-quality programming and to celebrate their hard work and dedication during the school year. This year's theme, "The Power of One Caring Adult," was selected to encourage and share best practices in social and emotional learning (SEL) skill-building. SEL speaks to the important work taking place in afterschool and summer camp settings and to the role that OST practitioners play in enriching the lives of the children they serve.
Guest speaker Dr. Robert Avossa (right), Superintendent of the School District of Palm Beach County, illustrated the power of caring adults in his remarks to the attendees at the Prime Time Awards Breakfast on Thursday morning, May 11, 2017, where Prime Time honored afterschool programs for achieving high levels of quality and practitioners for their out-of-school time-related educational achievement.
The Afterschool Symposium culminated with the annual Advancing Afterschool Awards 2017 Luncheon, hosted by master of ceremonies Kevin Rolston (right), radio host of the KVJ Show. Out-of-school time programs had the opportunity to nominate and recognize their peers for their dedication to high-quality programming and commitment to children and youth they serve by submitting nomination forms weeks prior to the Advancing Afterschool Awards 2017 Luncheon.
The winners were announced by Teal Chance, Prime Time's Quality Improvement Manager, and Dr. Matthew Shoemaker, Prime Time board member and Director of Extended Day Programming with the School District Of Palm Beach County.
