SEL Academy: SEL VII – Building a Culture of Compassion and Equity

Prerequisites:  Foundations in SEL, Afterschool professionals from a PSELI pilot school, Prime Time Registry ID

 

Having built a foundation of self-compassion and empathetic communication in previous sessions, participants are guided to explore embedding a culture of compassion and equity into the OST environment with intentionality. Participants learn evidence-based adult compassion and common humanity practices that can be applied with coworkers and built into youth activities. Participants are also invited to create an Afternoon Meeting Lesson Plan, applying Responsive Classroom key practices, SEL Academy learning and curricula resources.

 

Training Objectives

Participants will

  1. Define and provide examples of diversity, equity and inclusion practices in the context of positive youth development.
  2. Understand the neuroscience of bias and exclusion and relate to social-emotional learning skills.
  3. Practice de-biasing and cultural awareness tools to deepen self- and social awareness and improve relationships at work.
  4. Identify and implement tangible equity practices that build SEL skills, honor diversity and promote cultural responsiveness and inclusion in OST settings.
